IMUN (International Model United Nations)- Experience by Deeptika.S

 

International Model United Nations is a vibrant organization connected across the world to share ideas and to discuss global problems. It helps to learn about United Nations, diplomacy, and international relations. The official IMUN website https://www.internationalmun.org/  , it allows you to apply for conferences, internships and Olympiads. I joined the IMUN 69.0 online conference(7th-8th August)  out of curiosity and enjoyed the overall experience . It was a two day conference which cost $9 USD(Rs. 700). According to the reference document on allotment of committees and the countries one must represent , I was assigned to the UNICEF committee to discuss on the topic: putting an end two child marriage and teenage pregnancy as a delegate of United Arab Emirates. Materials for every committee and corresponding topics are shared with you email. The delegate’s Position Paper which has the countries stand on the particular topic must be submitted a day prior to the conference.

On the first day for a couple of hours basic training session was provided. Then the delegate are directed to their committee room in the zoom app. Head chairperson and co-chairperson lead and assist the committee. The committee starts with the general speakers list (GSL) . Required diplomacy must be maintained. Delegates are open to share their order of motion ( which is your desired direction for discussion ). The most voted caucus ( delegate’s recommended issue, that they wish to be discussed by the committee) either moderated or unmoderated was discussed by the committee. Moderated caucus is more official discussion, whereas in unmoderated caucus, the discussion can be between the delegates. The session is closed when a delegate “raise a motion for adjournment”.

The same procedure was followed on the second day of the conference. Later working paper  and a draft resolution was prepared. Working paper is a rough format for a draught resolution. These are formed by the sponsors who participate by giving the most classes, and the signatories who you wish to discuss the draught in the committee. The draft resolutions formed by the committee members are then discussed and voted. After the amendment (further required changes in the draft resolution), only one draft resolution was passed by the committee. Our committee passed a draft resolution on agenda “Saving the children: Putting an end to child marriage and teen pregnancy”. This was the end of the session. The certificate can be used for internships, higher education admissions and for job resume. This gave me a fruitful experience and opened a new door for wide exploration!
